Instruction for Authors, Journal of Plant, Algae, and Environment

Authorship

All authors listed must have made significant contributions to the manuscript and must have consented to the version that is ultimately submitted.

ORCID

To assist authors throughout the publishing process, the journal mandates that the submitting author provide an ORCID ID at the time of manuscript submission. This process typically takes approximately two minutes to complete.

Funding

All funding sources must be detailed in the Acknowledgments section. It is the author's responsibility to ensure the accuracy of the funder's designations.

Article types

The Journal of Plant, Algae, and Environment welcomes manuscripts in the following categories:

Original articles present findings from significant research projects that offer essential new insights into plant responses to environmental factors. The main text should not exceed 8,000 words.

Reviews solicit contributions from specialists who summarize and critically evaluate the current understanding of a specific area of plant biology. While Plant, Cell & Environment may occasionally accept unsolicited Reviews, authors are encouraged to consult the Editor-in-Chief beforehand. The pre-submission inquiry should include an outline of the proposed review, comprising a title, a list of headings, figures, and tables, a preliminary reference list, and a list of the main author's publications.

Instruction for submission of a manuscript

Title: concise and informative title: limited to 150 characters, excluding plant or species names unless central to novel findings. No abbreviations are allowed.

Affiliation: The complete names of the authors and the institutional affiliations of the authors at the time the research was conducted, accompanied by a footnote indicating the current address of the author if it differs from the location of the research.

Keywords: Please provide 5 to 7 informative keywords and encapsulate the essence and the main concept of the work.

Abstract: should be limited to 500 words and include the key terms relevant to the study. It should succinctly articulate the questions that inspired the research, outline the extent of the investigation, and summarize the main conclusions drawn from the work.

Main Text File

Manuscripts may be submitted as a single document that includes the main text, tables, and figures, or alternatively, figures and tables can be submitted as individual files. If your manuscript progresses to the revision stage, it is required that figures and tables be submitted as separate files. The primary manuscript file can be uploaded in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) format.

The main document must encompass the following components:

Introduction This section must deliver adequate information regarding the methodologies employed to ensure their reproducibility. It is imperative to include a comprehensive outline of the experimental design, detailing aspects such as timelines, sample sizes, and replication strategies, along with an account of the statistical analyses performed.

Materials and methods

This section must furnish adequate details regarding the techniques utilized to ensure their reproducibility. It should also encompass a clear description of the experimental design, including information on timelines, sample sizes, and replication, as well as a summary of the statistical analyses conducted.

Results

This section should present a clear and detailed account of the findings, substantiated by the accompanying Tables and Figures. It must refrain from any interpretation or discussion of the results beyond what is evidenced.

Discussion

This section should emphasize the importance of the findings and contextualize them within the framework of existing research. It must not introduce new information, engage in excessive speculation, reiterate the findings, or exceed 20% of the overall length. In certain instances, the Results and Discussion sections may be combined, but this must be adequately justified in the Cover Letter. In such cases, the concluding paragraph should encapsulate the primary conclusions.

Acknowledgments

All forms of financial support, whether institutional, private, or corporate, related to the work presented in the manuscript must be thoroughly acknowledged, along with any potential conflicts of interest.

Tables

Each table must have a title and, if necessary, footnotes that do not exceed two sentences. They should be positioned appropriately within the text.

Figures and Supporting Information

Figures, supporting information, and appendices should be supplied as separate files

For the final submission of a manuscript, the artwork must be in digital format and of good quality.

Each Figure, in its final size, must be a separate TIFF, PDF, or EPS file with a resolution of 300 dpi or higher. Combination images, or images that contain both vector and bitmap graphics, should be supplied at higher resolution to prevent image quality loss in the bitmap graphics.

Images must be provided as either one column (3.5 or 8.2 cm) or two columns (6.5 or 17.5 cm) in width and no more than 8 inches (18–20 cm) in height. Figures can be supplied separately as JPEG files.

Reference Style

This journal uses the Harvard reference style which includes examples of citations.

Journal article

This guidance can be used for articles from both print and online journals.

To be made up of:

  • Author (surname followed by initials).
  • Year of publication (in round brackets).
  • Title of article (in single quotation marks).
  • Title of journal (in italics - capitalise first letter of each word in the title, except for linking words such as and, of, the, and for).
  • Issue information, that is, volume (unbracketed) and, where applicable, part number, month, or season (all in round brackets).
  • Page reference.
  • DOI (if available).

Maps

Once your manuscript has been accepted, the editorial office will review your files to confirm their readiness for production. Should any updates or final files be necessary, you may receive communication regarding this. If no further action is required, your manuscript will be forwarded to the production team. Please note that if any data, scripts, or other materials utilized in the analyses presented in the manuscript are accessible through a publicly available data repository, authors are encouraged to include a reference to the location of these materials within their manuscript.

Correction to authorship

In alignment with the policies of Plant, Algae, and Environment, authors are permitted to amend authorship on a submitted, accepted, or published article if a legitimate justification is provided. All authors, including those who are to be added or removed, must consent to any suggested modifications. To initiate a request for a change, please reach out to either the editorial or production office of the journal, based on the current status of the article.

Additional Information

Colour figures

Color figures may be published online free of charge. Upon submission of color figures, an agreement will be provided once the accepted manuscript enters the production phase. If the quality of the color figures is deemed unacceptable, they will be converted to black and white for print publication.

Species Names

The scientific name of the species should be provided upon its first mention in the abstract or text. Additional details regarding ecotype, accession, or variety may be included in this section or the Materials and methods section. Abbreviations or common names intended for use throughout the manuscript should be introduced at this stage. It is not necessary to include the species name in the title unless the findings pertain exclusively to that species. Titles may instead reference plant families that are likely to be recognized by a broad audience (e.g., pine tress, wheat, legumes).

Genetic Nomenclature

Sequence variants should be described in the text and tables using both DNA and protein designations whenever appropriate. Sequence variant nomenclature must follow the current HGVS guidelines; see varnomen.hgvs.org, where examples of acceptable nomenclature are provided.

Sequence Data

Nucleotide sequence data may be submitted electronically to any of the three primary collaborative databases: DDBJ, EMBL, or GenBank. It is sufficient to submit to a single database, as these entities exchange data on a daily basis. The recommended phrasing for referencing accession-number information is: ‘These sequence data have been submitted to the DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank databases under accession number U12345’. The respective addresses are as follows:

DNA Data Bank of Japan (DDBJ): www.ddbj.nig.ac.jp

    EMBL Nucleotide Archive: ebi.ac.uk/ena

    GenBank: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genbank

Additional Information
Correction to authorship

In alignment with the Journal Policy and the guidelines set forth by the Committee on Publication Ethics, Plant, Algae, and Environment permits authors to amend authorship on a submitted, accepted, or published manuscript if a legitimate reason is presented. All authors, including those to be added or removed, must consent to any suggested modifications. To initiate a request for a change, please contact the journal’s editorial office, depending on the article's current status. Please note that changes in authorship may incur fees.

Color figures

Color figures can be published online at no cost; however, there is a fee for including color figures in print. Upon submission of color figures, a Color Work Agreement will be provided once the accepted manuscript enters the production phase. If the Color Work Agreement is not returned by the designated deadline, the figures will be converted to black and white for print publication.

Abbreviations

Generally, terms should not be abbreviated unless they are frequently used and the abbreviation aids the reader's understanding. Initially, the term should be presented in full, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Subsequently, only the abbreviation should be used.

Units: Measurements must be expressed in SI or SI-derived units. For further details regarding SI units, please refer to the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) website.

Mathematical formulae: Mathematical equations should be indented, with appropriate spacing allowed above and below the displayed equations.
